About danceLAB

danceLAB was established in 2006 by contemporary dance choreographer + teacher, Dan Rock, for students wishing to explore the contemporary dance genre + art form. Dancers attending danceLAB may wish to explore the creative nature of dance, be interested in increasing their technical ability, or may want to go on to pursue a career in dance. Whatever the objective, danceLAB provides an avenue for dancers to explore contemporary, classical + creative dance.

Weekly technique classes aim to increase technical skills + ability through the contemporary + classical dance genres, as well as increasing flexibility + fitness through body conditioning. Also on offer is the innovative LAB workshop. The LAB workshop focuses on different areas of experimental + creative dance each term, including: composition, duo, improvisation, choreography + film. In addition danceLAB students will have an end of year demonstration. This will showcase chosen choreographic + film works along with class work from throughout the year. Classes are taught by Dan Rock (Artistic Director) along with occassional guest artists.

danceLAB is committed to your child's creative and physical development. Students will gain a solid understanding of how their bodies work, progressively extending it through movement and training. danceLAB's approach starts with strong technique, covers the many and associated intergrated arts aspects of performance, creatively presenting dance and movement in a way that is meaningful to both the dancer and wider audiences.

In 2006 Dan Rock toured with two danceLAB students, Katelyn Mewburn and Isabella Stone, to the Ausdance Australian Youth Dance Festival in Horsham, Victoria. The two dancers performed the duet SOFT, beautifully, to a receptive audience. About Dan Rock

Dan Rock Artistic Director/Teacher

Dan Rock is a graduate from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (Dip. Performing Arts (Dance) and BA Performing Arts), and Edith Cowan University (Graduate Diploma of Education). She is currently a freelance dance creator and educator around Perth, Western Australia. Prior to this, she choreographed many independent works for festivals, including Dancers Are Space Eaters, Putting on an Act, and Joy Youth Festival. Danielle was a dancer for WA’s education dance company, Buzz Dance Theatre from 1998 to 2000 and in this time also choreographed for Steps Youth Dance Company. Danielle was Artistic Director of the Youth Dance Advance Concert for Dance Week 2003 as well as Artistic Director of John Curtin College of the Arts highly successful, full-length production of The Cinderella Project in 2003, which toured to NSW in 2004.

Danielle continues to choreograph for many companies including the Western Australian Youth Theatre Company, Perth Theatre Company, Barking Gecko’s Perth International Arts Festival show in 2004, The Cat Who Ran, and most recently for Steps Youth Dance Company’s Playhouse Theatre season MANIA. Danielle has also had the experience of working with large groups of performers from many cultural backgrounds for Oz Concert 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006, in particular creating high energy opening and closing segments with the entire cast. Danielle continues to explore her interest in dynamic and visually exciting contemporary dance choreography throughout Perth with young dancers through danceLAB.
